AGAIN just because you disagree does not mean its a trap or they are wrong.

I think someone made the post elsewhere on this board that up till 23 or so everything your parents say is wrong, afterwards you realize a lot of what they say is right. Same boat on this. Up till a few years on you, you think my school is great, it was the best, I loved it, go Wildcats or Bulldogs or whomever. Later you realize that as much as you loved it, there was things you wish you had experienced.

You were interested in History and thats great but there really isn't an advanced History [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] Now your math and sciences, thats a different story and since the world is Technology based, that is where it bites if you don't have the best opportunities.

I'm not saying consolidation is great or I love it. I'm not saying its something that should be rushed into. I'm saying that every child in the same school district should have the same options and the best chances to better themselves as any other. I'm saying as adults and parents that we should try within any fiscal realm possible to make sure that is the case. It's not equivalent for a student at PV, who has quick access to MECC or a student from Kelly, who has quick access to UVA-Wise, as is it to others and even then, that's not fair, due to the ability/inability of students to attend classes off campus. What is an option for students at one school in the county should be an option for all, since all taxpayers are footing the bill. Having one going to campus and one watching via high speed internet or tv isn't the same, the interaction isn't the same. A 2 minute fix isn't the solution either but sticking your head in the sand and screaming about fighting isn't either.

Well this thread is nothing if not a battle of opinions. If no one should stand up for their opinions, then there would be no need or point in posting anything here or anywhere else.

Well if youre going to argue that kids in Pound and Appy have a hard time getting to UVA or MECC.. its just as far to Wise from Pound whether you're going to high school or whether youre going to college. Same for Appy and BSG.

I have been told that when Greg Mullins was principal at Pound he offered to drive anyone that wanted to go to MECC down there himself. So its not as bad as some may think.

An unfortunate truth for our area. But, in MECC's defense, they are the equivalent of a Technical School for our area and provides a valuable service to those who do not want a traditional college educational experience, but do want instruction beyond the secondary level.

I grant you it's no MIT or Cal Tech. But you know what? I'm there because I want to be. Because I have no desire to go away to school. Not because I was not prepared.

I don't get your point about the same distance or such.

Here is the key

A student at Pound high school who wants to take a class taught at UVA-Wise has to leave Pound to go there, correct? Now unless I'm mistaken, Kelly is closer to UVA-Wise than Pound is. A student can leave a class at Kelly 5 minutes early and make it to a UVA-Wise and can leave a UVA-Wise and come into a class at Kelly 5 minutes. You can't do that at Pound. You're talking 15 minutes (or more) and then 15 minutes or more going back. To allow them to take a class at a distant location, they have to sacrifice classes they are taking at their high school.
If Greg Mullins would drive a student from Pound to MECC for a class, when he was principal, when would they have to leave? How much time would they be missing at school? You defeat the purpose of taking AP classes away from the school when you have to miss other classes to attend them. Then what happens when Greg Mullins, when he was principal, had to go to a meeting? What happens when he has to do principal duty? Then it passes around the buck, takes a teacher away from their duty or maybe them preparing for their class, to do that. So you end up screwing up others for their good. Are you going to hire someone to be a driver??

I agree that new schools or consolidated shouldn't necessarily be in Wise or BSG but more in a middle of the road area. The problem with Lee is there was one school built for a county that is to vast. If you built 3 schools in the Wise County area, how much more travel time are you adding to really anybody? Some you may increase 5-10 minutes, but you're going to decrease for others.

I wouldn't make fun of counts putting 'collage' when you put "wan't"

I never advocated taking AP classes away from the school. I just said they were all offered over VSEN on TV from Wise, which I think is not such a bad thing. And we also had "dual enrollment" calsses with MECC that were taught AT POUND.. like Pre-Calculus and English 111-112. I know because I was in both of them. Why do we need to go to MECC or UVA Wise to take a class that is already offered at Pound???

[/ QUOTE ] Here is the bottom line. Till you find a way to make this fair and money saving- IT AIN'T HAPPENING. [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] Read'em and weep. Last time one school was set to get oak lined lockers... see my point. All of them are children, all should get a fair chance. Classes, sports, whatever. Some of us are hardhead enough to stick around till we get it right. As far as AP- big deal, they sent shop kids to Wise for years, get a bus and run to U-VA-Wise and MECC for half days. That will work it has for years, there is the answer. Check the class rates for the advanced classes, we'd be better off to farm them out. Sorta like "outsourcing."
